Semester project proposal presentation

Goals

  • Share your finalized choice of paper to reproduce with the class (or for undergraduates, to share the exact nature of the dataset you aim to analyze for your project);
  • Formalize exactly which components of the paper you will reproduce (or for undegraduates, to finalize exactly how you hope to analyze/visualize the dataset);
  • Practice speaking clearly to an audience without use of slides (use of the whiteboard is permitted)
  • Practice conveying your message to a broad audience in short timed settings.

Guidelines

  1. Each student is allotted 5 minutes. This time limit will be strictly enforced.
  2. In your presentation, you should share the following information:

Graduate students:

  • What was the goal of the original study, and what were the results reported?
  • What has been your path to replication so far? (This includes, e.g. did you have to contact anyone for the dataset? If the data were made available, could you readily import them into R and start data exploration?)
  • What are the biggest hurdles you foresee in completing the remainder of your replication? For example is there any specialized statistical test or R library that you will need to learn to achieve your goal?
  • If replication of the full paper seems too onerous, what specific results or figures do you commit to reproducing by the end of the semester?

Undergraduate students:

  • What is the exact nature of the dataset (e.g. what information is available), and why was it originally collected?
  • What are some interesting questions that you could consider asking with these data, and what are the questions that you have chosen to address for your project?
  • What are the biggest hurdles you foresee in completing the remainder of your project? For example is there any specialized statistical test or R library that you will need to learn to achieve your goal?
  • What specific results or figures do you commit to reproducing by the end of the semester?

Grading

The project proposal is worth 10 points. You will be graded on whether you effectively convey the points above and whether you adhere to the time guidelines.
